Wine Review - Lamblin & Fils, Bourgogne Blanc 2004
This is a good example of what a Chardonnay can be when it’s not made in California or Australia and either never serves time in an oak barrel or is stored in neutral oak. For those adverse to the bland California Chards with overdoses of oaky vanillas and creamy butter, this simple Bourgogne Blanc will be a refreshing change, and revelatory. California Chardonnay is usually difficult to match up to food. This charming Chardonnay from northern Burgundy near Chablis is California’s alter ego, an excellent complement to seafood, poultry, and as an aperitif. It’s from a hillside vineyard near the village of Auxerre. It’s regally golden yellow in the glass, with a bright and fruity nose and soft floral, spring-like bouquet. There is a harmonious palate of crisp citrus and apple fruit that evolves into round peaches and fruit blossoms. A hint of vanilla can be detected but not excessively intrusive. Round and lengthy finish makes you happy. As far as Chardonnay goes, keep California and give me France. |
