The Coteaux du Languedoc is one of the appellations within the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region. It’s the most extensive among the appellations but not necessarily noteworthy for its remarkable wine. Vin ordinaire dominates here, unlike their surrounding siblings. However, don’t cross Coteaux du Languedoc wines off your list;

there are wines with promise. The Mathiérou is a Grenache-Syrah blend that is well-balanced with a dry, long finish. There are notes of berries, smoke, and pepper. It hints at a complex structure but doesn’t quite deliver. In the finish, the tannins take over and scrubs out a bit of the character. A chunk of cheese helps tame this astringency and no, American cheese doesn’t count. (06/29/05)
